Review Lorenz Abyss
We should start from the gift box as one of the best points of Lorenz watches is how the brand takes care of the packaging. As you can see from the picture, this box is part of the design concept that, in my personal opinion, brings value to a timepiece. In case of the Abyss the box is made of wood with a laquered blue coloring. The first impression I had when I opened the box is to understand why my followers often asked information on this model. It is a tribute to the Rolex Deepsea.
The manufacturing quality is very high and the watch is resistant with polish and brushed stainless steel finishings in the different parts of the case and the bracelet. In particular the case has the satin front and the polish side and the metal band is finished in the same way.
The bracelet is oyster style with double safety buckle. The horns size is 22 mm. and I should recommend Lorenz to provide a blue rubber band.
Going back to the case, it is a 43 mm. case with a height of 14,5 mm. (lug to lug distance is 52 mm.) and a weight of 185 grams.
The watch is equipped with a blue aluminium one way turning bezel with 120 clicks mechanism that is not very easy to turn with one hand. It has a luminous dot at 12 that enables to calculate the decompression time while diving.
One of the most interesting specifications of this watch is that is water resistant 300 meters and also the special colors of the dial, that turn from light blue to dark blue similar to black. This special feature reminds the different depths of the sea from which comes the name ABYSS.
The K1 mineral glass is much more resistant than the normal mineral and is layed on a stainless steel internal ring with two markings: High Resistant Crystal on the upper part and Professional Diver on the lower part to summarize the most important specifications of this model. Going back to the dial we have appiled indexes with a very luminescent layer of material that gives a very good readability in the dark. The same material is also on the hands.
The dial il extremely clean and allows a very easy reading; at 3 we have the calendar, a little bit small. I would have placed a cyclopic lens to enlarge it a little.
The watch has the screw crown with logo, well protected and with good scalpering, that makes turning and locking very easy (not so common on all diving watches).
On the case-back this Abyss has a diver picture made with hydraulic oil press, very nice looking and attractive to watch.
Movement
The Abyss is equipped with Miyota 8215 made by Citizen, quite common and used by different brands.
8215 is an automatic movement with date; one way turning oscillating mass, power reserve of 40 hours and 21 jewels. Vibrations per hour are 21.600 and has a parashock anti shock system. A very reliable movement but not the best, ideal for daily use.
Opinion and price
The retail price for this watch is 450 euro.
The buyers for this line are of two different types. The ones that would like to buy a Rolex Deepsea but that cannot afford it and those who need a very good diver’s watch. The Abyss is the ideal watch for everyday use; the dial is fantastic and perfect for classic or sporty outfit.
In my opinion an upgrade on the movement and the sapphire glass with cyclopic lens would definetly increase the appeal of the model (maybe the price as well).
